I can fix this problem by going into Task Manager and ending explorer.exe and running explorer.exe task again and my desktop comes to life. I ran into this problem with a friends computer this evening. Tried many of the suggestions, and still don't know why or how this happens so I'm sure there are instances when any one, or combination, of the things you come across work but here's what worked for me. To be honest, we can fix black screen in Windows 7 by following ways. Way 1: Boot your PC with the Last Known Good Configuration (advanced) option Step 1: Press and hold down the F8 button as you boot up your PC and before the Windows logo is displayed. This will bring you to the Advanced Boot Options.

Can you access Safe Mode? Repeatedly tap F8 as you boot? If so you can try Control Panel
- Device Manager - Display Adapter - Double Click on - Driver tab - click UPDATE driver -
then Right Click on Device and UNINSTALL - REBOOT.
Another method to try to access the desktop (try in both regular Windows and Safe Mode)
is to CTRL + ALT + DEL and on Process Tab find EXPLORER.exe and END PROCESS on it -
then on Applications Tab - lower right - New Task - type in EXPLORER.exe . Safe Mode is
reached by repeatedly tapping F8 as you boot up.
First check this thread in case its a simple one and if not come back to this thread.

Black screen issues are extremely tough to repair and any fix is usually on a hit or miss
basis. That there is no information on a black screen like there is on a blue screen just
adds to the difficulty. Often using a restore point nor startup repair will have any effect.
You can try a google to see suggested repairs some of which have worked however these
cover a wide field of efforts.
Here is a video of one fix.

Do you have a Window 7 Disk? You can try System Restore from it. If you do not have the
disks your system maker will sell them cheap. Or try from Safe Mode if you can get
there.

Windows 7 Laptop Screen Is Black
Rob Brown - MS MVP - Windows Desktop Experience : Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. So this started a few months back, and now its really getting on my nerves.
My System Spec
AMD Phenom II X4 955
4GB DDR3
ATI Raedon HD7770 1GB DDR5
Psu - 550W
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit)
The situation :-
Whenever I try to boot my PC, everything is fine till the 'Starting Windows' logo. And after that the screen goes black. I don't see the welcome screen.
I DO NOT have any mouse cursor. I CAN NOT run task manager. But my PC is still responsive - I can hear the welcome sound over the speaker, and also my keyboard works (turned the num-lock key on/off).
Then I hard-restart the PC. Usually it would run just fine, at least it used to when the problem first started. But now I have to restart multiple times, and at some point, it would boot without the black screen.
I can always boot into Safe Mode without any black screen.
I don't think its the PSU, as I have this same system config for about a year and this problem started just a few months back.
Things that I've tried :-
1. Checked the registry value (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonshell). Its value is 'explorer.exe' as expected.
2. Entered safe mode. msconfig. Disabled all non-windows services. Completely uninstalled the display driver. Still getting the black screen on normal boot.
3. Reformatted/reinstalled a fresh copy of Win7. Installed no driver and nothing. Shut down. Reboot. Still no joy.
4. I turned on Base Video in msconfig while in safe mode. And now i can boot normally, with crappy graphics. So this must be something to do with graphics driver, right? But i am using a fresh copy of Win7 right now, w/o any drivers!
So experts, please help!!
